Former Liverpool captain Phil Thompson says Philippe Coutinho would have been best equipped to star in his era at Anfield.
Thompson was asked as part of a fan Q&A on LFC Xtra which star in the modern team would have suited the sides he featured in. He didn’t think twice before choosing Coutinho.
“When you’re blessed with the ability that he has – you saw the likes of Dalglish drop off to make the No.10 role his own – Philippe Coutinho is one of those players that can thrill you,” said Thompson.
“He can get you out of your seat and he can score those goals you’ll remember. Philippe does it for fun. He whips them in with his right foot, whether it’s the near post or using the far post.
“He would have to be the one I think could have excited in our day.”
Coutinho scored more than any other Liverpool player in 2016-17 season, reaching a personal best of 14 in a single season for the club.
