N’Golo Kante found it hard to put his finger on why it went wrong on Wednesday night, but what the midfielder is sure of is that the team will respond to the setback quickly.
A trio of second-half goals condemned Chelsea to their heaviest home defeat for almost two years. In more recent times it was only the Blues’ second reverse in 17 league matches, and Kante was at pains to point out afterwards that surprise defeats are a part of football.
“We cannot explain it,” the Frenchman said. “I think we did a good first half, we had some chances but we didn’t score. When you lose 3-0 at home it’s hard.
“Bournemouth are a team who play good football. They surprised us in the second half; they scored three goals. This happens sometimes. We have to react and look forward to the game on Monday, and try to win again.
“We had control of the game at times but we didn’t create chances, and this can happen. We have to correct this and try and do better for the next game.”
For Chelsea’s next game, at Watford on Monday, the Blues will be able to call upon new signings Emerson Palmieri and Olivier Giroud. Kante gave his reaction to the club’s latest acquisitions, one of whom is already very familiar to him.
“I know Olivier Giroud from the French national team. We all know what he did at Arsenal. He’s a good striker who can score many goals. Emerson I don’t know well, but from what I have heard he is a good player.
“We hope they can bring something to the team and help us achieve something this season and in the future.”
