Manchester United forward Jesse Lingard is trending on microblogging site Twitter but it is not because he just extended his stay at Old Trafford but the terms of the new deal. Lingard’s wage was trebled.
The deal which keeps Lingard at United until June 2021 with the option to extend for a further year, is said to be worth £100,000 per week, a lot more than what several players much better than the United forward earn.
Liverpool’s Sadio Mane is arguably the Reds’ most important player; he earns £90,000 per week. So does Arsenal’s Laurent Koscielny and Santi Carzola, as well as Chelsea’s Nemanja Matic. Gary Cahill earns £85,000 at Chelsea. Toby Alderweireld and Christian Eriksen earn £75,000 per week at Tottenham. Football fans are miffed that Lingard will now earn more than these obviously better players in terms of contribution to their club’s performance.
Here are reactions from Twitter about Lingard’s deal:
We're paying Jesse Lingard £100,000 a week. As in Lingard. That mong that wouldn't get in Stokes side. I'm done with this club.

"Jesse Lingard" and "£100k a week" should not be in the same sentence.

£100,000 per-week for Jesse Lingard when he signs his new four-year contract. A good squad player, yes, but that is totally ridiculous.
