More than £40m to be lost if United fail to qualify for Champions League again

If nobody would tell Jose Mourinho how important finishing in the top four is to United, adidas would.

The German sportswear maker will cut the club’s £750 million kit deal by 30 percent if the club do not qualify for Champion League next season.

The Red devils find themselves 11 points behind Premier League leaders Chelsea, and eight below fourth-placed Arsenal as the club struggled to its worst Premier League start since 1990.

Annual profit from the £750m adidas kit deal will automatically be cut by 30 per cent, as the adidas contract always stipulated that no Champions League football for two consecutive seasons leads to a cut.

It’s still early to predict where United ends up this season, but with every point thrown away, the club moves closer to losing out on a top-four finish.
