Paul Pogba has backed Manchester United colleague Anthony Martial to make France’s World Cup squad next year.
Martial was recalled to Didier Deschamps’s group for the friendly with Wales on Friday and away clash at Germany next Tuesday after winning consecutive Player-of-the-Month awards at United.
Speaking before the Champions League tie with Basel, when he sustained the hamstring injury that has kept him out of action for the last couple of months, Pogba was asked whether Martial could regain a spot with Les Bleus despite the intense competition for places in Deschamps’s side.
“I am sure he will come back,” Pogba told MUTV. “I am sure as he is very good and had a great pre-season. Even during the start of the season, he helped the team a lot.
“Anthony is a big, big, big talent. He’s a talented player – one of the best players I have ever seen or trained with. He is still young and is going to improve. He will improve a lot and you are going to see even more of Anthony, I’m sure.”
Pogba was correct with his prediction and Martial will look to impress in the two fixtures with his country before returning to Premier League duty when Newcastle United provide the opposition at Old Trafford.
