Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid handed transfer bans

Spanish La liga giants Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid have both been banned from signing players until July 2017.

The two Spanish capital teams were hit with a transfer embargo due to irregularities over signing ‘minors’ — the same sanction FIFA hit Barcelona with in 2014.

Players under the age of 18 can move clubs once the individual meets one of these three FIFA criteria:

  • “Under 18s can move to a club in a different country if their parents move there for non-footballing reasons
  • if they are from another nation within the European Union or European Economic Area and aged between 16 and 18
  • or if they live within 100km of the club.”

The Madrid based clubs may now decide to spend big before the end of the month as their bans is scheduled to start in February.
